PARTICLE SIZE DISTRIBUTION AND MINERAL COMPOSITION OF GMZ-3 TAILINGS AND THE DISTRIBUTION OF GOLD AND SILVER ACROSS SIZE FRACTIONS
Main Article Content
Abstract
The particle size distribution, mineral composition, and size-fraction distribution of gold and silver in material from the GMZ-3 tailings storage facility were investigated. Particle size characterization was based on sieve analyses of nine samples collected at depths of 1–3 m, while mineralogical and geochemical characterization involved five samples. Fraction mass yields and Au–Ag grades in the composite material were compared, and the metal balance was checked by calculation. The mass yield of the −0.074 mm fraction ranged from 67.2% to 80.0% in individual samples and reached 76.2% in the composite material. This fraction contained 0.65 g/t gold and 1.4 g/t silver. The combined group of rock-forming components dominated the mineral composition, accounting for 90.58%; pyrite, arsenopyrite, and metal oxides and hydroxides accounted for 3.44%, 0.22%, and 5.49%, respectively. Elemental maps characterized the local distribution of mineral phases. Calculations revealed discrepancies between the calculated and reported metal distributions across size fractions. The findings support further chemical and mineralogical investigation of the fine fraction and reconciliation of the metal balance. Selecting a reprocessing method requires identification of the precious-metal host minerals, assessment of liberation, and determination of recovery through metallurgical testing.
