Abstract

The paper investigates the optimized utilization of hydropower potential available at irrigation canals and hydraulic structures by means of micro hydropower plants, from a water-resource management perspective. Pearson Type III distribution is applied to process the hydrological observations of the R-10 irrigation canal for 2016–2025, yielding the variation and skewness coefficients and the design water discharges for various levels of assurance. An optimization model is developed to maximize electricity generation while maintaining the required irrigation water supply as a priority constraint. A mathematical model based on water discharge, hydraulic head and power balances is proposed, enabling forecasting of energy generation under time-varying hydrological conditions.
