PETROGRAPHIC FEATURES OF BASIC AND INTERMEDIATE ROCKS OF THE KYZYLMACHIT PALEOVOLCANO
Main Article Content
Abstract
The article examines the petrographic, textural-structural, and compositional characteristics of volcanic and volcanogenic-sedimentary rocks belonging to the basalt–andesite–rhyolite formation series of the Kyzylmachit paleovolcano. Basalts, basaltic andesites, andesites, quartz andesites, andesidacites, and their tuffs were studied using macroscopic and microscopic methods. The results show that basic and intermediate volcanic rocks and associated metasomatites account for approximately 15–20% of the total paleovolcanic rock assemblage, whereas acidic volcanic rocks are more widespread. The studied rocks are characterized by massive, amygdaloidal, and porphyritic textures, microlitic, hyalopilitic, and intersertal structures, as well as secondary alteration processes including chloritization, carbonatization, epidotization, and saussuritization. Explosive-facies rocks constitute an important part of the paleovolcanic structure, with the explosivity coefficient reaching up to 75%. The petrographic characteristics of tuffs, tuff breccias, agglomerates, lava breccias, and tuffisites associated with volcanic vents and parasitic channels are considered important indicators for determining the spatial distribution of mineralization related to volcanogenic-hydrothermal processes.
